What is the Whot Card Game in Nigeria?

Whot is a famous game in Nigeria for its simplicity and strategic gameplay. It is played as a favourite pastime at social gatherings, family events, and among friends.

Here's an overview of the Whot card game in Nigeria:

The game's primary goal is to be the first player to eliminate all your cards. The game is played with a special deck of 54 cards divided into five shapes: circles, crosses, stars, triangles, and squares. The deck includes cards numbered 1 to 14, with unique cards like "Whot" cards.

Many regions have their rules variations, adding twists to the game. Whot is a flexible game suited for social settings, as two to six players play it.

A basic outline of the rules of the Whot card game:

Players are typically dealt a set number of cards (often seven), and the remaining deck is placed face down as the draw pile.

The upper card of the draw pile is turned face up to start the discard pile.

Players alternate playing a card from their hand that matches the shape or number of the top card on the discard pile.

If players cannot play a matching card, they must take it from the draw pile.

  • Special Cards: Certain cards have special functions:
  • Whot (20) can be played on any card, and the player can choose the next shape to be played.
  • 14 forces the next player to pick three cards.
  •  1, the "Hold On" card allows the player to play another card.
  •  8, also known as the "Pick Two" card, requires the following player to pick up two cards.
  •  allows the player to play another card immediately.

Whot is known for its ability to relax and entertain players and is usually played during leisure time and at social gatherings.
